LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 17-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team collected its third straight Big 12 Conference win with an, 89-53, victory over Texas Tech on Wednesday night inside United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.
West Virginia led from wire-to-wire in one of the Mountaineers’ most complete games of the season. WVU finished the contest shooting 50.9% from the floor and added a 28 of 31 mark from the charity stripe. The Mountaineers opened the contest a perfect 24 of 24 from the line, a mark that extended into the fourth quarter.
The Mountaineers won the battle on the glass for the 11th time this season after grabbing five more rebounds with 34. WVU finished the contest with 16 steals and forced the Lady Raiders into 26 turnovers.
Five Mountaineers finished in double figures as senior guard JJ Quinerly and junior guard Jordan Harrison finished with 21 and 20 points, respectively. It is the second time this season the pair have both managed 20 points in the same game.
Quinerly finished 7 of 9 from the floor including a perfect 12 of 12 mark from the charity stripe. The Norfolk, Virginia native added seven steals and four assists as both were a game-high. Harrison led WVU with five rebounds and added three assists and two steals.
Junior guard Sydney Shaw added 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting, including a 3 of 4 mark from beyond the arc. Fifth year forward Kylee Blacksten and junior forward Celia Riviere added 10 points in the win.
The Mountaineers opened the contest scoring the first 11 points of the contest and pushed the Lady Raiders to a 0 of 6 mark from the floor. The Mountaineers also forced TTU into four early turnovers. The Lady Raiders scored their first point five minutes in before the Mountaineers scored nine straight to a 20-2 advantage with three minutes to play. Quinerly finished with 11 points in the quarter as Harrison added eight to give WVU a 24-8 lead after the first.
TTU outscored the Mountaineers 7-4 over the first six minutes of the second before a 9-0 run for West Virginia saw the Mountaineers push its lead to 22. Leading 37-17 with 1:30 to play in the half, WVU scored the final five points of the quarter to take a commanding 42-17 lead at the break. The Mountaineers outscored the Lady Raiders 14-2 over the final four minutes.
Quinerly and Harrison led the Mountaineers over the opening 20 on both ends of the floor. The dynamic duo combined for 29 of WVU points led by Quinerlys 17. Quinerly added four steals and four assists while Harrison corralled a team-leading four rebounds.
West Virginia and Texas Tech traded baskets in the third, both finishing the frame with 24 points. Shaw led the way for the Mountaineers with nine of her points in the quarter. The Mountaineers got back on track in the fourth, outscoring the Lady Raiders 23-12 on its way to a 36-point victory.
The margin of victory marks the 12th time this season West Virginia has defeated an opponent by double digits. It is also the Mountaineers’ eighth win by 30 or more points.
West Virginia is 19-6 all-time against TTU, including an 8-4 mark when playing inside United Supermarkets Arena. The Mountaineers have won 14 of the last 15 meetings and have not lost to the Red Raiders in regulation time since the 2017 season.
Quinerly currently sits 11th in points at 1,628, and behind Hall of Famer Liz Repella (2008-11) with 1,641. She is 6th in steals with 275 and sits just three away from cracking the top five with Maria Tchobanova (1996-99) who has 278.
West Virginia stays on the road for a weekend showdown with Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 3 p.m. ET in Stillwater.
