MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams renew the Backyard Brawl against the Pitt Panthers and will also face George Washington in a tri-meet at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, on ACC Network Extra.

This is West Virginia’s first action since it hosted the WVU Invitational from Nov. 20-22. The men’s swimming and diving team placed second while the women’s swimming and diving team placed fourth.

Both the men’s and women’s teams lost to Pitt in Morgantown last season.

Redshirt senior Danny Berlitz has been a dominant force throughout the season for the Mountaineers, winning two individual events at the WVU Invite.

In his most recent appearance, Berlitz won the 400-yard individual medley at the United States Open Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Sophomores Delaney Cox and Maddie Smutny have paved the way for the women’s swimming and diving team this season. Cox and Smutny each posted two top 10 times at the WVU Invite.

Cox swam the sixth fastest time in program history in the 100-yard backstroke (54.33) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.50) at the WVU Invitational.

Smutny swam the fifth fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.23) and the ninth fastest time while winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.02) at the WVU Invite.

In the diving well, the Mountaineers have received consistent performances from sophomore Owen Recker. He has already posted NCAA Zone qualifying scores on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform.

Junior Sarah Krusinski and sophomore Abigail Sullivan have posted zone qualifying scores for the women’s team. Krusinski has qualified on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform. Sullivan has qualified on platform.
