IOWA CITY — Just minutes after a thrilling Carver-Hawkeye Arena debut, Angelo Ferrari was quick to answer what he learned about the Iowa wrestling program since arriving on campus.

“I have all these guys that, every single day I’m getting a different feel,” Ferrari said. “I’m getting different reps, I’m getting different reactions.”

The bigger guys in the lineup have undoubtedly been a success story this season from 184 pounds and bigger, None of the dual starters at those weights have lost a match yet.

They say it’s the ‘iron sharpens iron’ mentality in the program that is bringing the best out of them. The athleticism and defensive grittiness of Ferrari, the craftiness of Gabe Arnold and the pure strength of Ben Kueter make every scrap different during practice.

The one outlier from 184 pounds and up is Stephan Buchanan, the experienced graduate student among a trio of freshmen. At his third program during his college career, after spending time at Wyoming and Oklahoma before arriving at Iowa, the Wisconsin native has become a pro at securing flights and event tickets for friends and family through the years.

Now only five hours from his family in Loyal, Wisconsin, Buchanan can’t help but grin when asked about being with the Hawkeyes in his final collegiate season. Not only is he significantly closer to family, but he’s found a place that has elevated his training as a wrestler too.

It would have been easy to assume that Buchanan, a three-time NCAA All-American and back-to-back third-place finisher, is the leader of the group. However, just like the youngsters around him have said, the different strengths of his teammates have raised his level of wrestling. On the season, he’s posted a 4-0 record and three top-10 victories.

“These are young guys, but they are sharpening me too,” Buchanan said. “These guys are some of the most athletic and sound wrestlers I have wrestled in my career.

Coach Tom Brands raved about his 197-pounder and how his talents on the mat have changed things for the young guys. He said Buchanan is a great character guy and can combine that with a winning attitude. Those things shine on the mat and rub off on the young wrestlers around him.

“The important part is that it (character and winning attitude) transcends into his wrestling, into his competitiveness,” Brands said. “It makes him a better wrestler.”

It’s been a bit since the heavier guys in the Hawkeyes lineup have been as rock solid as they are now. The variety of skills, combined with a glue guy like Buchanan, have made Iowa one of college wrestling’s toughest dual opponents.

The Hawkeyes have two minor things to note at 141 and 157 pounds ahead of their doubleheader in St. Charles, Missouri.

Cullan Schriever draws the OR designation with Ryder Block at 141 pounds. The Mason City native competed for the starting spot to 133 pounds last year before losing it out to Brody Teske. Since Iowa has two duals Friday, it wouldn’t be surprising for Schriever to make his season debut after going 8-3 the year prior.

At 157 pounds, the Hawkeyes have not announced a starter and labeled the spot “TBA” as of Tuesday afternoon. When asked about options at the weight, Brands said they plan to bring about 19-21 wrestlers to Missouri for the doubleheader, meaning there is likely to be several options at the weight and some late additions to weigh-ins at others.

Here are the probables for Friday night’s action, which will be streamed on UFC Fight Pass beginning at 6 p.m. CT against Princeton.
