The NFC West is a puzzle — a confusing, thousand-piece puzzle. Sunday’s game between the Seattle Seahawks (7-5) and Arizona Cardinals (6-6) should help put the picture together, if only for a moment. With first place on the line, the Cardinals come in as slight home favorites.

How to watch Seahawks at Cardinals

Arizona is coming for that No. 1 spot in the division. The Cards have a narrow point differential of +7, but they are 11th in both total offense and scoring defense. They led a formidable Minnesota team on the road last week, 19-6 late in the third quarter, before the Vikings stormed back. Kyler Murray has found his footing this season, but that fourth-quarter performance should be zapped from memory — he went 6-of-12 and threw two interceptions, including a bewildering lob to former teammate Byron Murphy Jr.

This defense is coming together, though. Across Arizona’s last four contests, opponents have been held below 80 rushing yards and sacked almost five times a game while converting a paltry 34 percent of third downs.

But the Seahawks handily beat the Cardinals in Week 12, a 16-6 grinder in Seattle. Their defense is no joke, and Leonard Williams is finally coming on — he notched 2.5 sacks on Murray two weeks ago, and followed with two more sacks and a pick-six against the Jets last Sunday. Julian Love has also made a star turn in Mike Macdonald’s scheme.

Geno Smith will never write back. The veteran quarterback has a chance at captaining his first division title one week after leading a comeback over the team that drafted him. Seattle’s biggest concern should be its offensive line — a bottom-10 group in run-block win rate and pressure percentage.

The Seahawks have won six straight head-to-head. The Cardinals have just one home win in this series since 2013 — a 37-34 overtime shootout in 2020.
