MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 18-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team defeated Central Florida, 80-58, in its Big 12 Conference home opener on Wednesday inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
 
Senior guard JJ Quinerly finished with 30 points in a game for the fourth time in her career, scoring a season-high 31. She added three steals, three assists and three rebounds.
 
The Mountaineers jumped out to a commanding 50-16 lead after the opening 20 minutes to get back in the win column. West Virginia used a 40-25 advantage on the glass, including a 17-7 margin on the offensive end to collect the win.
 
Junior guard Sydney Shaw matched a career-high with five made three pointers to finish with 19 points. Junior guard Jordan Harrison stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 12 points, six assists, six rebounds and one steal.
 
Fifth year forward Kylee Blacksten finished with a game-high seven rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Senior guard Sydney Woodley finished with five steals.
 
Quinerly opened the contest scoring 11 of the Mountaineers opening 20 points to an 11-point advantage at the first media timeout. Leading 20-9, West Virginia held UCF scoreless from the field over the final four minutes to a 32-10 lead. WVU finished the opening quarter on a 17-1 scoring run, making five of their last seven field goals and holding the Knights to a 0-of-6 mark from the floor.
 
West Virginia forced Central Florida into 11 first quarter turnovers as Quinerly scored a program quarter-record 17 points across the opening 10 minutes. The mark surpasses the mark held by Tynice Martin (16), set against Texas during the 2019 season.
 
The second quarter was all WVU, outscoring UCF 18-6 to a 50-16 lead at the break. West Virginia outscored the Knights 18-2 over more than nine minutes of the quarter till four straight points by Central Florida afforded the Mountaineers a 34-point lead as time expired.
 
Quinerly (21) and Shaw (16) paced the Mountaineers over the opening 20 minutes, scoring 37 of the Mountaineers points. Shaw was 4 of 7 from beyond the arc while Quinerly finished 8 of 12 from the floor.
 
Central Florida outscored the Mountaineers in the third and fourth quarter with WVU starters playing limited minutes. UCF outpaced WVU 19-15 in the third and 23-15 in the fourth as the Mountaineers won by 22 points.
 
The margin of victory marks the 11th time this season West Virginia has defeated an opponent by 20 or more points.
 
The Mountaineers are a perfect 4-0 all-time in the series after sweeping both meetings last season. WVU is now 2-0 in games played inside the WVU Coliseum and 3-0 in Big 12 Conference play against the Knights.
 
Quinerly currently sits 12th in points at 1,588, and behind Olayinka Sanni (2005-08) with 1,602. She also ranked 7th in steals with 263 and is just behind Alexis Basil (1984-87) with 268.
 
West Virginia returns to the floor on Saturday, Jan. 4, when they welcome BYU to the WVU Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.
