Quinerly Named Student-Athlete of the Week – West Virginia University Athletics

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard JJ Quinerly of the West Virginia women’s basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
The Norfolk, Virginia native averaged 25 points, four assists and four steals across two contests. Her play led the Mountaineers to an 80-58 win over UCF and a 66-53 win over BYU.
 
Quinerly scored a season-high 31 points against UCF, setting a program record with 17 points in the opening quarter of the contest. She closed out the week with 19 points against BYU.
 
Quinerly has now scored in double figures 80 times in her career. She is 11th in all-time points scored and sixth in steals in program history.
 
This Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers take to the road for two contests… WVU opens the week against Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas on Wednesday… tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET… the Mountaineers then head to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma State on Saturday… Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. ET.
 
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers moved to 12-2 on the season and 2-1 in Big 12 Conference play after collecting two home wins to open the new year … West Virginia first defeated UCF on Wednesday by a final score of 80-58 … it marked the 11^th time this season WVU has won by 20 or more points in a game … senior guard JJ Quinerly finished with 30 points in a game for the fourth time in her career, scoring a season-high 31… She added three steals, three assists and three rebounds … the Mountaineers closed out the week with a 66-53 win over BYU on Saturday … Quinerly scored in double figures (19) for the 14^th time in as many games this season. She added five assists and five steals … Senior guard Kyah Watson narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals … junior forward Celia Riviere finished with a career-high seven rebounds and added six points.
 
Notes: WVU returns eight student-athletes to the floor this season, including four of five starters from an NCAA Tournament team a season ago … All-Big 12 First Team and Defensive Team selection JJ Quinerly highlights the returners … She was also named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team and was named to the Naismith College Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, the 2025 Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Watchlist and the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watchlist … Jordan Harrison was named to the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year watchlist … Quinerly has eclipsed 1,500 points in her career this season as Harrison and Zya Nugent have broken the 1,000-point mark… the Mountaineers finished the nonconference schedule a 10-1… Mark Kellogg is now 21-1 in regular season nonconference game as head coach of the Mountaineers.
 
This Week in Wrestling: No. 22 West Virginia hosts No. 13 Iowa State in a Big 12 clash at the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday at 7 p.m. … the Mountaineers will then host Pitt for the Backyard Brawl at 1 p.m. on Sunday … the Iowa State match is True Blue, and fans are encouraged to wear blue … the Pitt match is Coal Rush as fans are encouraged to wear black.
 
Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia defeated Princeton on Jan. 4, 27-12, in its first action since Dec. 21.

This Week in Gymnastics: West Virginia remains on the road when it travels to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, for a dual meet at Central Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 12 … the meet is slated for 1 p.m. ET inside McGuirk Arena.
 
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU earned a first-place finish in its season-opening dual meet at Temple inside McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 4 … the Mountaineers posted a team score of 193.6, while the Owls placed second with a final score of 191.2 … West Virginia tallied scores of 48.6 on vault, 48.675 on uneven bars, 47.35 on balance beam and 48.975 on floor exercise … on the podium, freshman Sophia Rice earned a win on vault in her Mountaineer debut with a 9.85, while junior Miranda Smith secured a third-place finish with a score of 9.75 … on bars, fifth-year senior Trinity Macy and seniors Brooke Alban and Anna Leigh tied for first place with matching scores of 9.775 … sophomores Julia Brown and Kaylei Adams tied for first on beam with a pair of 9.8 scores … sophomore Amber Lowe scored a 9.875 to secure first place on floor, while classmate Jurnee Lane tied for second place with a 9.825.
 
Notes: Lowe’s total on floor matched her career high, which she earned three times last season … Adams, Macy, Rice and freshmen Karleigh DiCello, Emerson Smith and Taylor Tuohy recorded their first career action for West Virginia in the season opener … in the first week of the Road to Nationals rankings, WVU ranks No. 28 overall and No. 11 on floor exercise … the Mountaineers also are No. 3 in the Big 12 on floor.
