Gamblers in North Carolina wagered more of their own money on sports in November than in any other month since betting became legal in March.
And it wasn’t that close.
They bet more than $638.6 million in paid wagers in November, according to the North Carolina State Lottery Commission’s monthly report. The figure far eclipsed the $589 million in real money wagers that bettors made in October.
The total betting handle in North Carolina was $657.6 million n November, just shy of March’s record total of $659.3 million. That initial total was inflated by more than $202 million in promotional wagers or free bets given by operators to attract customers.
Since betting was legalized in March, gamblers in the state have bet more than $4.7 billion on sports.
North Carolina collects an 18% tax on gross wagering revenue, which it calculated as $78 million for November. The state collected more than $14 million in the month, pushing total tax collection to $98.6 million since March’s launch.
The taxes goes to a variety of programs, including the athletic departments at 13 public universities in the state.
Since football season began in earnest in September, the state has wagered at least $575 million each month.
