MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia returns to the Associated Press Top 25 rankings this week, the Mountaineers checking in at No. 23.

Two weeks ago, WVU cracked the rankings for the first time in three years when coach Darian DeVries were ranked 21st following its road victory at then-seventh-ranked Kansas.

Last Saturday, West Virginia upended second-ranked Iowa State 64-57 at the WVU Coliseum before a Jerry West Day crowd of 14,444.

Guard Javon Small, this week’s Big 12 Player of the Week, scored 27 points, grabbed seven rebounds, handed out five assists and made four steals in an outstanding all-around performance. At one point late in the game, Small scored 12 straight points for the Mountaineers.

It was the fourth ranked team and third top 10 team West Virginia has defeated this season.

West Virginia (13-4, 4-2) is also ranked 23rd in this week’s coaches’ poll. The Mountaineers have been ranked three-straight weeks in that poll.

This week represents the 265th time in school history West Virginia has been in the AP rankings since its first-ever appearance on Dec. 26, 1950.

WVU remains in Morgantown to face Arizona State on Tuesday night in a 9 p.m. Big 12 game that will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.

The Sun Devils lost at Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon.
