MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia remains in this week’s coaches’ poll at No. 25 but drops out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll, both released earlier today.
West Virginia fell two spots outside the top 25, according to the media, below St. John’s with 83 votes and Oklahoma with 63 votes. WVU tallied 61 votes this week after cracking the poll for the first time this year last week at No. 21.
WVU did climb in this week’s NCAA NET rankings, checking in at No. 29 on Monday morning.
The Mountaineers went 1-1 for the week, losing 75-56 at home to Arizona last Tuesday and winning 78-70 at Colorado on Sunday afternoon.
In that game, West Virginia got 26 points from guard Javon Small and 18 off the bench from Joseph Yesufu while improving to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play.
Yesufu’s two big baskets down the stretch helped WVU win for the second time on the road in conference play this season. Small played 38 out of a possible 40 minutes.
“Javon was exhausted, and rightfully so,” West Virginia coach Darian DeVries said afterward.
It’s the first time since 2023 the Mountaineers have won two conference road games in the same year, and the two league road wins so far already match the road-win totals of the last two years combined.
West Virginia remains on the road to play at 10th-ranked Houston on Wednesday night at the Fertitta Center where the Cougars have won 31 straight.
Last Saturday, Houston defeated Kansas State 87-57 and is now No. 3 in this week’s NCAA NET rankings, three spots above No. 6 Iowa State, which comes to Morgantown this weekend.
West Virginia University will be honoring the memory and legacy of Jerry West, who died on June 12, 2024, at age 86, against the Cyclones. That game has already been announced a sellout. Iowa State checks in at No. 2 in this week’s AP poll.
