MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team opens its 2025 campaign with a dual meet at Temple on Saturday, Jan. 4.  The meet is set for 3 p.m. ET, inside McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Saturday’s meet will be streamed live on ESPN+, while live stats are available at WVUsports.com.

The Mountaineers are set to open their season on the road for the third time in the last four seasons, including the first time since 2023. Additionally, Saturday’s contest marks the second straight season WVU will begin the year against Temple. West Virginia is 11-12 in season-opening meets under 14th-year head coach Jason Butts.

Temple and WVU meet for the 52nd time in program history on Saturday, with the Mountaineers holding a 50-1 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams last met in the 2024 season opener on Jan. 7, as West Virginia claimed a 193.8-191.9 victory over the Owls in Morgantown.

West Virginia returns to competition in 2025 after posting an 8-15 campaign in 2024. The Mountaineers celebrated their 50-year anniversary, with the gymnastics program’s varsity status dating back to 1974. West Virginia earned its 800th program win on Jan. 28, topping Kent State 194.825-194.05, while Butts earned his 150th career victory at Illinois on Jan. 13, with a win over UW-Oshkosh. Standout gymnast Abbie Pierson concluded her impressive career with 1,880.8 points to rank No. 5 in program history and tie for the program record in meets competed with 60.

The Mountaineers are led by four seniors this year, including Brooke Alban, Anna Leigh, Trinity Macy and Sierra Muns. Alban is the most experienced gymnast on the roster, having competed in 37 meets and amassing 708.125 points. The Urbana, Maryland, native ranked fifth on the team in 2024 with 300.275 points and added a pair of podium finishes last year. Despite battling injuries during her career, Leigh also is a consistent member of WVU’s bars and beam lineups and will look to make her return to the floor squad this season.

A reliable member of the vault lineup in 2024, Muns is back to help the vault team make its return to the top 25 this season. Joining the Mountaineers’ senior group this year is graduate transfer Trinity Macy, who brings in four years of D-I gymnastics experience at Pitt and Eastern Michigan.

Additionally, seven freshmen will look to make their Mountaineer career debuts this season, including Karleigh DiCello, Riley Maness, Sophia Rice, Kaelyn Skeel, Emerson Smith, Taylor Tuohy and Eden Webster.
