MORGANTOWN, W.Va. After earning a 9.95 on floor exercise, senior Anna Leigh of the West Virginia University gymnastics team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

A native of St. Michael, Minnesota, Leigh earned a perfect 10.0 from one judge and a 9.9 from the other to earn a career-best 9.95. The total topped her previous career high of 9.925, which she earned as a freshman on Feb. 21, 2022. The score marked the highest for WVU on floor since sophomore Jurnee Lane scored a 9.925 on Jan. 28, 2024, as well as the first 9.95 since Emily Holmes-Hackerd earned it against CMU and Pitt on March 5, 2023.

With the total, Leigh tallied an event win on floor, her first career win on the event. She now owns three event wins and 11 podium finishes in her career. Leigh ranks No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference and No. 27 nationally on floor exercise.

West Virginia now looks ahead to its first home meet of the 2025 campaign when it welcomes Kent State to Morgantown on Thursday, Jan. 16. Competition inside the WVU Coliseum is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. It’s 90’s Night, with a 90’s style band tee giveaway to the first 250 fans and 90’s throwback music played throughout the meet. 

This Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers are set for two home contests this week… WVU opens play on Wednesday, Jan. 15, against Colorado … Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN+ … the Mountaineers then host Iowa State on Sunday, Jan. 19 … Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET and will be WVU’s first nationally televised home game of the season airing on Fox.

Last Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers moved to 13-3 on the season and 3-2 in Big 12 Conference play after collecting splitting two road games … WVU opened the week with an 89-53 win over Texas Tech … Five Mountaineers finished in double figures as JJ Quinerly (21) and Jordan Harrison (20) led the way … West Virginia then lost to Oklahoma State 64-57 … Kylee Blacksten led the Mountaineers scoring effort with 16 points.

This Week in Wrestling: No. 22 West Virginia hits the road to face Oklahoma on Friday, Jan. 17, and Oklahoma State on Sunday, Jan. 19.

Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia lost to No. 13 Iowa State and No. 18 Pitt … against Pitt, fifth-year No. 3 Peyton Hall pinned Jared Keslar to get his 20th win of the season … the win also ties Hall for second all-time in WVU history with 120 career wins.

Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU posted a team score of 193.75 to finish second in a dual meet at Central Michigan inside McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, on Jan. 12 … the host Chippewas took first place with a 193.95 to top the Mountaineers (1-1) … West Virginia tallied scores of 48.1 on vault, 48.375 on the uneven bars, 48.425 on balance beam and 48.85 on floor exercise … the highlight of the meet was on floor, where senior Anna Leigh earned a career-high 9.95 to pace the lineup … in the final event results, freshman Karleigh DiCello earned her first career podium finish with a win on vault (9.75) … sophomore Julia Brown finished second on beam (9.825), while classmate Amer Lowe (9.8) and DiCello (9.8) finished in a tie for third place … Leigh earned the floor title, the first of her career on the event, followed by freshman Emerson Smith in second (9.85).

This week in Track and Field: West Virginia returns to the track after being off since Dec. 7 … the Mountaineers will send split squads to the YSU Collegiate Invitational and the Nittany Lion Challenge on Jan. 17 and 18, respectively … the YSU Collegiate Invitational will be held at the Watson and Tressel Training Site in Youngstown, Ohio while the Nittany Lion Challenge will take place at the Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in University Park, Pennsylvania.
