Video: Kirk Ferentz talks matchup with Missouri, transfer portal
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz discusses a variety of topics after learning about the Hawkeyes’ Music City Bowl matchup with Missouri.
IOWA CITY — Iowa football’s postseason matchup has been set.
The Hawkeyes will play Missouri in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl. The game will be held at 1:30 p.m. CT on Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in in Nashville, Tennessee.
This will be the second time in the last three seasons that Iowa will appear in the Music City Bowl. Two seasons ago, the Hawkeyes beat Kentucky, 21-0. This season, Iowa will face Missouri.
“I believe our fans will be excited about the chance to see this Hawkeye team play one more time at a venue not too far from Iowa,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said via a release. “As a staff, we are looking forward to three more weeks together with this group of players. The Music City Bowl is a great opportunity for our team to compete one more time to cap off the 2024 season. We can’t wait to get there.”
The last time these two programs met was the 2010 Insight Bowl. The Hawkeyes prevailed 27-24 over the Tigers in that matchup.
Iowa and Missouri were scheduled to play in the 2020 Music City Bowl, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Tigers’ program.
Missouri started the 2024 season by winning six of its first seven games. But the Tigers lost momentum as they went 1-2 during a three-game stretch in the SEC. Missouri then rebounded with two consecutive wins to close out the regular season.
The Tigers’ three losses all came on the road to SEC opponents — Texas A&M, Alabama and South Carolina.
Missouri finished the regular season 9-3 overall, including 5-3 in the SEC gauntlet.
The Tigers came in at No. 19 in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings.
Iowa football’s roller-coaster 2024 regular season ended with an 8-4 overall record. The Hawkeyes had some tremendous highs — with blowout wins over Washington, Northwestern and Wisconsin and a thrilling victory over Nebraska. But there were also gutting lows — with frustrating losses to Iowa State, Michigan State and UCLA.
Iowa was 6-3 in the Big Ten.
Kaleb Johnson, who had a historic regular season, will not play in the bowl game after declaring for the NFL Draft.
This will be the fourth consecutive season that Iowa plays an SEC team in a bowl game. The Hawkeyes played Kentucky twice, Tennessee last season and now Missouri.
Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz is in his fifth season leading the program. He holds a 37-24 overall record in his tenure with the Tigers. Missouri is 1-2 in bowl games under Drinkwitz. The lone win came in a 14-3 Cotton Bowl victory over Ohio State last season.
Iowa is 1-2 in its last three bowl games, including a 35-0 loss to the Vols last season.
The bowl game gives Iowa a chance to win at least nine games in three of the last four seasons. The Hawkeyes won 10 in 2023 and 2021. The Hawkeyes had an eight-win campaign in 2022.
Missouri stands between Iowa and a ninth win this season.
