Video: Kirk Ferentz on the QB situation, facing his son Brian at Maryland
Kirk Ferentz discusses a variety of topics ahead of Iowa’s matchup with Maryland.
IOWA CITY — The once-hopeful Cade McNamara era at Iowa has likely come to a close.
For the second time in his college career, McNamara will be entering the transfer portal, he announced Wednesday.
McNamara shared a message via social media:
“My last two years at the University of lowa have been an incredible journey. Through so many ups and downs, I couldn’t be more thankful for the amazing people and experiences l’ve had here. I am deeply grateful for the relationships l’ve built with my teammates, coaches, and newfound friends.
“I want to specifically thank Coach Ferentz, Coach Lester, and the entire lowa Football staff for their unwavering support and wisdom. I will truly miss this program and state, and they will always hold a special place in my heart.
“With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal.
“I’m looking forward to this offseason, being the healthiest I’ve been in years, and continuing my growth as a player, leader, and person. I am excited to see where God takes my football journey next.
“Now and forever, Go Hawks!”
McNamara is the latest Hawkeye to depart the program during the season, joining other notable offensive players Kaleb Brown and Leshon Williams. That trio, expected to play major roles on offense entering the 2024 season, didn’t pan out as expected.
McNamara, who started college in 2019, could be granted another year of eligibility. His career has been riddled with injuries and he also played during the truncated COVID-19 season.
Upon his commitment to Iowa out of the transfer portal in 2022, there was optimism that McNamara would be able to solve the Hawkeyes’ quarterback woes. McNamara led the Wolverines to a Big Ten championship and a College Football Playoff berth in 2021.
But his Iowa career fell far short of expectations.
In two turbulent seasons with the Hawkeyes, McNamara appeared in games, throwing for 1,522 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a 57.3% completion percentage.
Coming off a season-ending injury in his final campaign at Michigan, McNamara’s first run with the Hawkeyes didn’t last long. After playing through a quadriceps issue, McNamara suffered a season-ending ACL injury in his fifth game at Iowa. His 2023 season was done shortly after it began. Iowa still got to 10 wins that season and went to the Big Ten Championship Game thanks to dominant defensive and special teams units.
Returning from his second consecutive season-ending injury, hope was more cautious entering the 2024 season, but there was still hope.
Another wrinkle was thrown into the story. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr served self-imposed one-game suspensions for the Hawkeyes’ season opener against Illinois State due to potential NCAA violations pertaining to the transfer portal recruitment of McNamara.
That set the tone for what was an underwhelming 2024 season. McNamara had more struggles than highlights. He was just 13-of-29 passing in Iowa’s rivalry loss to Iowa State. He committed three second-half turnovers against Ohio State. Fans’ impatience surrounding McNamara heightened.
Going into Iowa’s late-October game against Northwestern, the plan was for McNamara to start but backup Brendan Sullivan to also get a crack at running the show. As it turned out, McNamara suffered a concussion against the Wildcats and Sullivan took over for the remainder of the game, leading the Hawkeyes to a win.
The last pass McNamara threw as a Hawkeye turned out to be that pick-six against Northwestern.
McNamara did not suit up for the remainder of the year, missing the last four regular season games. Iowa’s quarterback carousel, meanwhile, continued to turn. In his second start at Iowa, Brendan Sullivan exited due to injury against UCLA, thrusting preferred walk-on Jackson Stratton into the game. Stratton went on to start Iowa’s final two games of the regular season, as well.
The McNamara era at Iowa, which began with so much hope, failed to deliver on that. It instead included multiple injuries, coaches’ suspensions and nearly as many interceptions as passing touchdowns.
McNamara’s uninspiring Iowa career has come to an end.
