Kirk Ferentz on whether he’ll return to Iowa in 2025: ‘That’s my plan’
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz discusses a variety of topics on early signing day.
IOWA CITY — Kirk Ferentz plans to be on the Iowa football sideline next year for his 27th season as head coach.
“You know something I don’t know?” Ferentz joked Wednesday when asked about his future. “(But) that’s my plan, yeah.”
Just one game remains in Ferentz’s 26th Iowa season, a year in which the Hawkeyes finished the regular season 8-4 with bright spots and frustration mixed together. The veteran head coach is 204-123 all-time at Iowa, one victory away from tying Ohio State’s Woody Hayes for most wins at a Big Ten program.
Ferentz will be 70 years old by the time Iowa kicks off the 2025 season. And with the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics taking over — for better or worse with NIL and the transfer portal — several older, high-profile college coaches have called it quits in recent years.
For all the things Ferentz questions in today’s climate, he feels the beauty of college athletics still remains.
“There are a lot of things that I don’t want to say are frustrating. But a lot of things make you really step back and think, ‘Huh, that’s interesting.’ But the more the game changes, the more the circumstances change — it’s still about being around good people,” Ferentz said. “And what we enjoy, I think I speak for our whole staff, when you get the right guys on your team it’s a lot of fun. We’re 100-plus population, so not everything is going to be perfect. We’re not all going to best buddies. But I think there’s a mutual respect amongst our team and people in the program. To be part of that on a daily basis is pretty special. So I’m enjoying that part of it.
“There are things that frustrate you, obviously, at times. Injuries frustrate you, and you can’t do a thing about them. It’s just part of the game. And I wish it was 20 degrees warmer the other night, quite frankly. A lot of things you can’t control. But the good stuff is still the good stuff. That hasn’t changed, and that’s the fun part about this thing.”
