Video: Josh Dix talks game-winning 3-pointer vs. Northwestern
Josh Dix discusses Iowa’s thrilling win over Northwestern to open Big Ten play.
This story has been updated with new information.
IOWA CITY — Northwestern coach Chris Collins called it deja vu.
He had been here before. Tuesday’s game-winning 3-pointer was nearly a replica of what occurred in 2019.
Down by two to Northwestern with three seconds remaining, Jordan Bohannon caught a side out-of-bounds pass a drilled a deep game-winner.
Nearly six years later, Collins let that memory inform him under similar circumstances.
On Tuesday, Iowa had the ball down by two points with less than six seconds remaining. The Hawkeyes’ possession looked like it was going a whole lot of nowhere, so Payton Sandfort alertly called a timeout.
“It didn’t look good with what we had going,” Sandfort said.
The Hawkeyes set up a side out-of-bounds play with 0.8 seconds remaining.
“We actually told our guys that was the play they were gonna run,” Collins said. “They ran a very similar play against us five or six years ago and Bohannon made the same shot. It’s kinda like deja vu. I have to look at it. We had talked about just staying connected to those shooters, because with 0.8, really all they can do is catch and shoot. So I’d have to look at it.”
With less than one second remaining, Dix caught a pass from Brock Harding on the inbounds play and nailed a game-winning 3-pointer from 30+ feet. It lifted the Hawkeyes to an 80-79 win over Northwestern in the Big Ten season opener, saving the Hawkeyes from a disastrous collapse.
The score of that 2019 Hawkeye victory? 80-79, just like Tuesday.
“It’s a hard thing defensively if you’re Chris,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “Or if you’re the guy guarding it. Because, OK, are you going to switch everything? You don’t want to foul, you’re up two. You want to make them take a contested tough shot and you can’t foul. We’re in the double bonus. Anytime you run a play, there’s multiple options. And they took away two or three of them.”
But Dix got enough separation.
With the victory, Iowa improved to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference.
Iowa came out of the gate with great energy and intensity, jumping out to a 13-3 lead less than six minutes into the contest. The Hawkeyes led by as many as 17 in the first half and went into the break up by 11.
That gave way to a horrendous stretch of basketball by Iowa. In less than nine minutes, Northwestern turned that 11-point deficit into a one-point lead. During that span, Iowa looked like a shell of the team that was on the floor in the first half.
Northwestern had three players in double-figures scoring: Brooks Barnhizer (21), Ty Berry (20) and Nick Martinelli (19). That trio was sensational in the second half, scoring 36 points after halftime.
Northwestern, which shot just 44% from the field and 33% from deep, turned it around after halftime. The Wildcats shot 52% from the field and 44% from long range in the second.
Iowa, meanwhile, saw its numbers plummet. The Hawkeyes shot 65% from the field and 55% from deep in the first half. In the second half, Iowa was 45% from the field, 25% from deep and 46% from the free throw line.
The Hawkeyes were outscored 45-35 in the second half.
Prior to Dix’s defining moment, Iowa was hanging on by a thread in crunch time. Down by three, Harding scored and was fouled with 14.3 seconds remaining. He had a free throw to tie the game but missed.
It highlighted a terrible second half at the free throw line by Iowa. The Hawkeyes were just 6-of-13 from the charity stripe after halftime.

But even then, Iowa had another chance. Northwestern went 1-of-2 from the line. That opened the door for Dix to deliver the dagger.
“Your last option is Josh and he made it,” McCaffery said of the play. “So not surprised. He’s tremendous.”
Iowa had four players score in double-figures: Dix (22), Sandfort (20), Owen Freeman (16) and Brock Harding (12).
Iowa didn’t have its full bench depth on Tuesday. Sophomore Seydou Traore, who is averaging 6.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, and freshman Cooper Koch, who is averaging four points per game, were both out against the Wildcats.
Tuesday was the first of three consecutive power-conference opponents that Iowa plays. The Hawkeyes face Michigan on the road on Saturday in another Big Ten clash. After that, Iowa hosts in-state rival Iowa State.
