With championship weekend in the books, it’s officially bowl season in college football.

Headlining the postseason is, of course, the College Football Playoff, which this year is expanding to a 12-team format from its previous four-team field.

How many teams will the Big Ten have in the College Football Playoff? That exact answer will be unveiled in just a few hours during the final CFP rankings, but the conference is expected to have a strong presence.

Is Ohio State well positioned to make the CFP despite having two losses on their respective schedules, including a Week 14 upset to Michigan? Outside that loss, Ryan Day’s Buckeyes have two signature wins against Penn State and Indiana and a one point loss to Big Ten champion Oregon.

On top of the Buckeyes, one potential team to keep an eye on for the CFP is Indiana. Despite going 11-1 overall in the regular season, with their lone loss to Ohio State, the Hoosiers were the No. 10 seed in the last CFP rankings.

The Big Ten’s postseason presence doesn’t end at the CFP, as the conference is expected to send several programs to bowl games throughout the country over the next few weeks as well. With that, here’s which bowl games the Big Ten could be sending teams, including which may be playing in the College Football Playoff:

Big Ten College Football Playoff projections

Projections courtesy of USA Today’s live CFP tracker

  • CFP first round: No. 10 Indiana at No. 7 Ohio State
  • CFP first round: No. 9 Tennessee at No. 8 Penn State
  • Rose Bowl: No. 1 Oregon

Using USA Today’s live CFP tracker from Saturday night, four Big Ten teams seem to be well-positioned to make the College Football Playoff.

One notable entry is a rematch of Indiana and Ohio State in the first round at Ohio Stadium, which the Buckeyes won 38-15 and in which they out-gained Indiana 316-151 in total yards of offense three weeks ago

Of note: the format rules of the CFP state the selection committee will not make any special arrangements to ensure teams that met in the regular season will avoid playing in the postseason, as displayed in Smith’s rankings with Indiana- Ohio State and Oregon-Penn State in the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere, and despite losing in the Big Ten championship game to top-ranked Oregon, No. 8 Penn State is projected to host No. 9 Tennessee in Happy Valley.
